About this location
The Macha Theatre was founded in 2000 in a historic theatre once home to Shakespeare productions. The non-profit produced and showed original plays, documentaries, and films with an emphasis on LGBTQ and Latina stories. Lesbian shows included: Garbo’s Cuban Lover, a play about Greta Garbo’s love affair with Mercedes de Acosta; a series of lesbian short films curated by Betsy Kalin; Lavender Love focused on the life of Alla Nazimova; and a staged reading based on Jeanne Córdova’s memoir When We Were Outlaws. The theatre closed due to rising rents and gentrification around 2018.
