About this location

Plummer Park and its Great Hall were constructed in 1938 as part of New Deal era efforts to expand park space. In the 1980s and 1990s the park took on a new role as a meeting place for the Los Angeles chapter of ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), founded in December 1987. It provided an organizing space as they campaigned for research to end AIDS, universal healthcare, compassionate release for incarcerated people with AIDS, and clean needle exchange. Lesbians including Mary Lucey and Nancy Jean MacNeil helped lead the chapter. More recently the park hosted the 2017 Frida Fest, co-sponsored by the City of West Hollywood and the L-Project Los Angeles. The event featured lesbian, bisexual, and trans visual and performing artists from the Los Angeles area. The park also hosted a 35th-anniversary event for ACT UP LA in 2023.
